WDR has learned from a source close to Marvin Lewis, that Marvin has decided he will NOT return to the Cincinnati Bengals. This source reveled that the negotiations between Marvin and Mike Brown did not result in a compromise, and Marvin has decided to move on.
However, we all know these things can change (other than Mike Brown hiring a GM...that will never change). Stay tuned and check back throughout the afternoon.
UPDATE: our commenters confirm via the Bengals twitter account and 700 wlw that Marvin is actually back. Wow. More later when details are released. While we are suprised our source was wrong (trust us when we say this was a good source), we are very interested to learn what concessions Mike Brown has made to keep Marvin in Cincy.

Could you give us any details that would make this information more credible than Schefter's report?
Posted by: Kevin Jones | January 04, 2011 at 01:20 PM
All this talk about a source says he's returning, a source says he's not returning...I've decided not to invest any emotion into this until I've heard for sure that he's back or he's gone. Despite how interesting this is, especially finding through all of this that Marvin is our best hope for ownership making changes.

Huh? More info please. Who's the source? Where and when did you hear this? At what point did the negotiations fail?
Posted by: EdHochuli'sArms | January 04, 2011 at 01:54 PM
The only thing that would arouse my interest in this is if Mikey gave player personnel duties to Marvin and hired some scouts. Other than that...
Same old Sh1t.

I think comrade Buck would give his source if he thought that was okay. I guess he doesn't think it's okay.

From Adam Schefter:
"Lewis left the Bengals complex when the two sides could not agree on franchise's direction and his future there is in serious jeopardy."
as is the future of the cincinnati bungles....

Or this, I love the comment about "Mike Brown's bare-bones, throwback approach".
Today - 3:00 PM ET
Head coach Marvin Lewis' future with the Bengals is reportedly "in serious jeopardy" after talks broke off Tuesday afternoon.
The sides hoped to resolve their issues in two meetings Tuesday morning. Instead, Lewis left the Bengals complex, perhaps never to return. Contrary to previous reports, it's not believed that an indoor facility was a sticking point. The main issue remains owner Mike Brown's bare-bones, throwback approach to staffing and scouting.

As they said on 700, "I want to know the details." Press conference coming. Cautiously optimistic...not checking out on this team yet.

Press conference at 4:30PM 700 WLW

The two things we'll learn about the concessions Mike Brown made to Marvin: Jack and Shit.
Posted by: Rich | January 04, 2011 at 04:09 PM
Prepare to learn nothing about the concessions made by ownership to Marvin.
I'd be very surprised if the news conference is nothing more than "we are excited about another season of Bengals football as we try to move this organization forward and be a competitive (a.k.a. "mediocre") team in the coming years."
Posted by: Steve | January 04, 2011 at 04:19 PM
Probably true, Rich. I'm still counting down to 4:30. I'd like to know if I should be happy or pissed.
Posted by: Houshbag | January 04, 2011 at 04:20 PM
Before we get too giddy on concessions made for Marvin to sign, check out Lance's post when Marvin was originally hired. Lots of quotes on all the control Marvin would have. We know howw that turned out. MFB sold him a bag of crap then, let's hope Marvin gets something in writting this time.

"and it looks like the Bengals are going to coach the Senior Bowl, which means their coaching staff is going to be intact. Brown know he's giving ammunition to a livid fan base seeking change."
Posted by: ICEMAN | January 04, 2011 at 04:35 PM
Same old Same old. Some player changes, maybe assistant coach change here or there. No changes in control of the organization. Mikey says change is coming but continues to ignore the fact that he is the root of the problem and won't change. No additional scouts. Blaming bad luck and injuries. No indoor practice facility.
WTF? I'm sick to my stomach listening to this crap.

Yeah...that was just depressing to listen to after starting off saying changes would be made. Doesn't sound like any real change is coming.

This just in, BREAKING NEWS
Straight otta Mike Browns mouth "Marvin Lewis is my BITCH"
He's back, status quo. Maybe a coach or two might be moved but as the days move on that slight glimmer of hope with a Bratkowski firing will fade away.
The claim they will be better with no rhyme or reason as to how they will get there.
Season ticket holders please do not renew them
Posted by: kotw65 | January 04, 2011 at 04:46 PM
I'm listening to the press conference now. What a bunch of stool. Completely devoid of detail or substance.
kotw65, I disagree with you. WE are Mike Brown's bitches.
Posted by: Rich | January 04, 2011 at 04:50 PM
What's the point of a press conference if not to convince people of your decision?
If you have a press conference that said basically "We're making changes, and we're not telling you what the changes are because you don't need to know. Fuck you, you'll buy our shit, buy our tickets, and watch our games regardless."
How does that serve Mike Brown?
Posted by: Rich | January 04, 2011 at 04:55 PM
I've lost the faith I had in Lewis. It's worse than I imagined, and I'm not ignorant of Mike Brown's history.
Posted by: Houshbag | January 04, 2011 at 04:55 PM
GArbage, why did I allow myself to get even the slightest bit optimistic? That told me nothing except that Mike continues to think that having 3 "scouts" is the way to go, that he "wants a practice facility" but doesn't think it would help (read: it aint happening), and that some coaching "changes are coming" right, like in '94 when he said the same hting and fired the ST coach? FUCK MiKE BROWN< AND FUCK MARVIN LEWIS FOR ALLOWING MIKE TO RAILROAD HIS ATTEMPTS AT MAKING THIS TEAM RELEVANT.
ONE upside, I actually heard it said that the goal is to win a SB. Although even that was tempered when followed with the word "eventually."
F U C K
Posted by: CurseofBoJackson | January 04, 2011 at 05:00 PM
I agree, the press conference is a complete joke. Our only hope is that Mikey Boy is too embarrassed to openly talk about giving up any kind of power, but Marvin got him to change things privately. Doubt it though. Looks like we're going to spend next season watching Bratkowski design new ways to go three-and-out.
Posted by: Rob F. | January 04, 2011 at 05:00 PM
Towards the end of the press conference MFB stated that they will assess coaching changes as to the direction they want to go and if the coaches do not want to do it that way they will get some who will.
I suspect very little will happen
Posted by: kotw65 | January 04, 2011 at 05:03 PM
wow.
wow.
might be the most depressing press conference ever.
mike brown just grabbed us by the nuts. squeezed. and laughed.
Posted by: vince | January 04, 2011 at 05:05 PM
The only positive was that Marvin said "I'm very satisfied with where we are at right now", meaning after the negotiations.
It was a lame press conference. I think that Brat and possibly Simmons are gone as coaches, an inside facility will happen, but not for a while, but there will be no new scouts or inside personnel.

For the love of God, Cincinnati, stop buying tickets. Stop buying luxury boxes. Stop putting up with this BS.

The Whole 9 Yards -->
a) Brat, Alexander and Simmons gone; Hue Jackson in as OC/Asst HC; a couple of ball-busters in at OL and STs
b) Indoor Practice site ready prior to first season with 18 games
c) New scouting group: 4 college and 2 pro scouts (all full-timers)
d) HC in charge of roster with final say on FA signings, veteran releases and all draft picks
e) Commitment to eventually hiring GM who will assume roles of d) above
f) HC in charge of all coaching staff hires/fires
What Lewis probably got -->
a) Brat gone only if Jackson comes over
b) "We'll talk about the indoor facility once the 18-game season is finalized"
c) "We'll look at the scouting thing after the draft -- it's too late now to make a difference"
d) "I'll talk to you before I sign, fire and draft guys"
e) "If you become paralyzed prior to the end of your deal, I'll let you finish out as an assistant GM to me"
f) Once guys' contracts are up, I'll ask you whether you like them before I decide whether they return
Posted by: West TX | January 04, 2011 at 05:18 PM
P.S. --> Remember that:
* "The Whole 9 Yards" still leaves us at 4th-and-1
* "What Lewis Probably Got" gives us the reach-around to go with Mikey's "love"
Posted by: West TX | January 04, 2011 at 05:22 PM
One thing that disappointed me was Mikey Boy's "We play outside, we can practice outside," comment. Thats just one of many examples that he hasn't changed his ways at all.

Holy shit Mike Brown actually blinked! I never thought that he would give in to Marvin's demands to make this team more professional.
It is going to be fun to read the fine print of the agreement.

That really means Marvin and his staff have to wear a coat and tie everyday to work.
Posted by: Comrade Ken | January 04, 2011 at 06:08 PM
Housbag,
Hob changed his story now to, "it looks like the Bengals could end up coaching the Senior Bowl for the third time under Lewis, even though the coaching staff is going to have some changes."
Hob also added, "Lewis said all coaching positions are up for evaluation and that some aren't going to be back."
If I am reading correctly between the lines, Bratkowski is done. If he is not, I am. Good god I hope the former is the case.
Posted by: blesterov | January 04, 2011 at 07:07 PM
Overlooked in the talk about how we got nothing is the fact that we're probably losing Zim. He's head coach material, and the league owners know it. He's as good as gone now that he knows he's hit the ceiling in this organization.
Posted by: Dan R. | January 04, 2011 at 07:11 PM
Dan --
How do you figure? He's been an assistant for 15 or so years, has no head coaching experience and has one true year of goo work to show for his three years as coordinator here. His name has only popped up for the Miami job, and that's after names like Cowher and others are thrown around. Zim's staying.
Posted by: EdHochuli'sArms | January 04, 2011 at 07:19 PM
Not to mention that the defense wasn't as great this past year as it was last year.
Posted by: Rich | January 04, 2011 at 08:24 PM
that's some inside source you've got there, WDR. They have any good stock tips?
Mike Brown wins again thanks to the epic stupidity of Bungle fans.

Just read the press conference transcript.
I can't think of the words.
Just one thing. The comment that MFB made about how the scouting department deficiencies are just something people bring up when things aren't going so well.
MFB averages double digit losses every year.
Things are never going well.
Amazing. He completely defended everything he does.
Posted by: JM | January 04, 2011 at 09:19 PM
Where can you find the transcript? Is it on Bengals.com?
Posted by: Jeff | January 04, 2011 at 09:53 PM
Mike didn't railroad Marvin. It's the other way around. Marvin is a losing head football coach. He has one of 32 positions in the NFL.
I think he played the Brown on this one.
Heartening thought though. With all of the coaching changes, the AFC north will only have one. And that team will be getting better.
Posted by: JM | January 04, 2011 at 10:23 PM
Wow, been busy all day today, 44 have weighed in on the goings-on!
I'm afraid to say anything until I know Marv is staying...until then, I'm just an agnostril with an itchy pickin' finger...
Meanwhile George Vogle's telling everyone this morning @ 9am on the 5 news that Marv is staying...all I can say is, in the words of Fox Mulder (actually a poster near his desk),"I Want To Believe"

Mike thinks the scouting system is "all right". Not best in show, not state of the art, not the model of professionalism.
Just "all right".
God damn. I hope WDR picks that bullshit press conference apart statement by statement.
However my douchebaggery flickered briefly and I got slightly excited that In Marvin's statements to media after the MFB public service announcement he was asked specifically about Bad-call-ski. He did not say he would be back.
Posted by: JM | January 05, 2011 at 12:51 AM
Gawd! To watch you guys melt down! Oh this is 'funnee'!
I love the comments about buying (or in this case: NOT BUYING) season tickets... As I've said before, MBMBB doesn't have to put ONE ass in ONE seat and he STILL will make a PROFIT! Because some certain 'stool' bags decided to give MBMBB the proverbial 'key' to the 'outhouse' -- that is city hall, he is set up for the rest of his natural life and a part of his daughter's -- soon to be coming up. He is 'set' because some 'turd burglars' decided that '(Wipe the tears here folks) We can't go without an NFL team!' Boo Fruckin' Hoo!
I do find it rather interesting that Marvin will be back, I am not (however) worried about the years of the contract (as McAllister was saying that MBMBB and Marvin 'The Martian' (my new nickname for him -- not a pejorative though -- just that it 'sings! -- kinda like: 'Provo's Privy'!, rather I am 'wondering' about the exclusions etc. What happens if there is a lockout, how does that affect things (if at all). Options? To MBMBB's side or MTM's side? I would hope it is geared more towards MTM's side.
Finally, I do get a chance to gloat in the sense that there are so many people enamored of this situation and live it vicariously (working with a pro team from another sport, I've seen this far more often than I thought human beings were capable of), that they are collectively 'pissing splinters' at this point -- when reality says: "It's only just a game!"
Oh, and I forgot, Bienemy has got to be losing his mind that even MTM didn't make much of an indoor pratice facility! bwahaha! Funny that ESPN did say that the Bengals went to an indoor soccer facility to practice prior to meeting the Jets the previous year. I guess the thing to take from that is that the soccer facility was good enough and no boondoggle (of which PBS can assuredly be called) of an indoor practice facility is needed. Hey I happened to think about it, the punters can go practice at the old Fujitec Elevator Experimentation facility up I-71. Come to think of it, remember Jeff Blake? He could have practiced there too! hahahaha!
