I typically don't get into the minutiae of rosterology for whatever reason. It's tremendously fun and a great time waster, though, so let's do some of it cause it's Friday. I just read Joe Reedy's post saying that he believes Briscoe makes the roster over Cosby because of his greater potential and the fact that he wouldn't clear waivers while Cosby might (which I guess means we could keep both rather than just one).
So, dear readers, what the hell would you do with this situation? I think it's a particularly interesting case because on the one hand you have:
Cosby: special teams player extraordinaire and decent enough back up receiver and clearly all around awesome intangible and hustle guy (threw first and last block of Scott's return TD last year vs Pitt)
On the other:
Briscoe: sort of intriguing upside guy that I know very little else about
My instinct?
Why on earth carry both JT O'Sullivan and Jordan Palmer and force yourself to make the choice between these receivers anyway? Cut one of those guys. We're fucked if Carson goes down regardless so who cares about backup QBs. Cut JT so you don't hurt the Palmer family vibe.
If not that, I'd prefer to see Briscoe let go and keep the valuable swiss army knife guy Cosby. So Briscoe might be good later. Newsflash: there might be no later in Bengaldom. The team can win now, the lockout looms and who the fuck knows after that.
Or cut Simpson. Or Dan Coats.
What would you do?

completely agree with you that cosby has to make the team over briscoe. its all well and good that briscoe has potential, but lets be honest, that potential is 2-3 years down the road and as what, a good number 2/3? i dont think anyones confusing his athleticism with a big time star wideout. we need people to help carson win now, right now, as realistically you have to think he only has about 3-4 years of prime left. im not a big "special teams only" kind of guy, i hate purify, i hate hebert, i hate all of these "intangibles only" guys, but cosby is the rare TANGIBLE special teams contributor. hes proven he can play not only as a returner, but as a key initial blocker for big returns throughout the preseason and in my opinion legitimately makes the team better this season. i mean if we keep briscoe, how is he going to dress? hes not, so we end up with jerome simpson part deux with less upside. i say let someone else take on this project, and who knows, maybe we end up keeping him on the practice squad anyway, and we can always draft another guy with high upside late in the draft, those guys come dime a dozen thats why they slipped in the draft in the first place. i would keep cosby and simpson over briscoe for sure, but i also agree i have no problem letting dan coats' sorry ass go if they feel strongly about briscoe for whatever reason. to me though, briscoe just looks like a poor mans kelley washington, and thats not worth creating a 7th wr roster spot for...

Cosby is staying. He tweeted that he made the team. Briscoe should stay. It's 3 years later and Simpson is barely fighting for a #6 WR spot. He should be pushing as the #3 guy by now. Cut the losses and work with Briscoe--he'll be a MUCH better NFL WR than Simpson will ever be.
If Coats makes the team I'm going to stomp on a litter of puppies. I hate that bitch.

I agree. Keep Cosby he is a special teams ace in that he puts his body out on line so someone else can break one. Briscoe just looks slow, not Matt Jones slow, but he just doesn't seem to have the foot speed to make it.
I just hope we don't get TJ back now that his ass is getting shipped out of Seattle. All of this bitching about the Bengal's failure to fill his spot is mute now. He couldn't even fill his own spot in Seattle (a pretty shitty team). I am glad to his mouth get thrown under the bus. I never bought his 4th grade logic that he didn't play his age since he sat on the bench for a couple of years and didn't get the abuse. I would love to find out if he still believed that strong logic.

Lockout Schmockout, I am going to record all the games this season, good or bad, and watch them next year too, and all the months around then, and pretend its fall year round

I have no Quans about keeping the Cos, you know, just...'Cos
Posted by: Hofbraunow | September 03, 2010 at 08:00 PM
...and, while you're at it, bring back The Cos...-let
Posted by: Hofbraunow | September 03, 2010 at 08:02 PM
That's right; make mine a breaded veal Coslet, yes-please

Actually, really I am 'sitting-on-a-bench-and-I-see-it-on-the-fence', on this one...you know, have to wait and see...kinda like watchin' paint dry...

cut simpson and coats. especially coats. and screw the seahawks for their stupidity. "he didn't produce"?? except for lower tds than his average, his numbers were damn close with a worse team around him. be glad to have TJ back. at the right price of course.

It would be awesome if we got TJ back...I wish we could go for broke this season before any lockout

Not related, but I like the idea that the signing of Stacy Andrews is now the last straw for offensive line coaches, who respond by resigning.

When is (was?) the NFL roster deadline?
Posted by: Hofbraunow | September 04, 2010 at 09:53 PM
Deadline was 6 PM eastern time tonight.
Posted by: Mockenrue | September 04, 2010 at 11:59 PM
Checked out the roster earlier on the Bourgeois site.
Hmmm...my non-scientific, non-bourgeois, non-vulgarian opinion is that we keep Chase and skip J. Simp

O'Sullivan out, LeFevour in. Can't get any worse, so I approve.
Posted by: Mockenrue | September 05, 2010 at 07:57 PM
The only thing I don't like about the LeFevour for O'Sullivan move is that it leaves us with our backup having NO experience at the NFL level...big thing not to like. I like LeFevour though, and this may be somewhat of a case of getting a QB for the future....possibly.

It would be nice if the Bengals would dump Coats and pick up Richardson to have a real fullback.
And am I in the minority when it comes to people in favor of getting Housh? For the right price at least it would be great to add him and add depth at WR.

OK, here's my 'off-topic' rant of the day...
WTF is it with these 'ham-bone' POS's out there like Cromartie-Smith and Andrews-Jones and Tow-Arnett.... You are playing one of th emost manly sports on the fucking planet and you use a MAIDEN NAME you idgits! Sack up like you've got a pair -- even though that comes into question when you us a HYPHENATED NAME (think Sam Kinison schtick here). You fucking pussies!
We now return you to your normal... ...ahh what the fuck, ain't nuttin' normal over here!

Heard a coworker last night mention LeFevour is plan B in case we don't get Leinart. Anyone else hear that we're interested Leinart, or is this my friend's wishful thinking?
Posted by: Bengal in Browns Territory | September 06, 2010 at 10:27 AM
Nevermind...just read somewhere that Leinart signed with Houston.

"And am I in the minority when it comes to people in favor of getting Housh?"
I am sure I don't speak for anyone, but hell no you are not in the minority there.
@ wch:
Yes. It is very sad that those players use hyphenated last names. That is very confusing and disturbing. I hope they get the help they need, which at the very least should include a good chuck upside the helmet...
...maybe they should 'hyphenate' their helmets:
unbolt the facemasks, and then re-attach them with little keychains, so they're nice and hyphenated

Houshmandzadeh is now a Raven. Beautiful.
Posted by: Mockenrue | September 06, 2010 at 02:10 PM
Yeah it sucks, but no matter.
He shall not stand against us,
especially if Ray Lewis recruited him.
I think I've lost a little bit of 'respect-for',
after that, because that was weak.
Onward, WDR !!!

TJH was just betting the odds. He saw Corey Dillon go off and get a ring by going to the right team, and is probably hoping he can duplicate the feat. The Ratbirds are a pretty good bet, unfortunately that's still quite a good team Newsome has assembled in Baltimore.
But I didn't want to see the Bengals go out and sign him because you don't win by having all your top receivers on the wrong side of 30. Shipley will catch the balls TJH would have caught (unlike that bum they signed last year Coles)
