WDR Official Policy on Character

As noted previously, the AFC North just can't get away from this focus on issues of character.  These incidents spurred some chatter in our comments recently asking WDR to clarify our stance on character since, admittedly, we pretty much go back and forth.

Now, there are a lot of writers (at least, during the season) so some of that just comes down to disagreement amongst us.  We by no means have unanimous opinions on anything except that leaving Mike Brown to his own devices will always end in disaster.  Take me for example, I wholly disagreed with bringing Henry back against Marvin's wishes yet I would have had no issue whatsoever with pursuing Brandon Marshall.

Hypocritical?  Inconsistent?

No.  Character is simply a matter of risk/reward. 

At the time, I simply thought bringing Henry back would make Marvin look foolish after Marv denied Henry's return in a press conference and the negative aspects of his return outweighed the positive aspects of his receiving ability.  Whereas, as of this offseason, I think the short term and long term benefits of having a number 1 receiver like Marshall outweighed the chance he would turn into a basket case and the costs of signing him.

Remember, those are ex ante calls, made at the time. With hindsight I may be wrong (and likely am with Henry).

Human nature is what it is.  You will find pieces of shit in any profession.  And those pieces of shit might have lots of talent at their job.  All you can do is take calculated risks on these pieces of shit based on their risks and their rewards.

My problem with the Bengals is that they don't do any calculating.  They just see a cheap piece of shit and drool.  A low price does a lot to mitigate the downside, but not everything.  How low would Pacman's price need to drop for you to be interested?

Certainly, you can find enough talent without baggage to win a Super Bowl.  It might require scouting a little harder and putting in more hours and (gasp) paying full price though, so don't expect the Bengals to change their methods anytime soon.
