PFT Also Finds Free #85 Jerseys Strange
Chalk up Profootballtalk.com as someone who agrees with WDR on the peculiar current promotion by the Bengals Pro Shop, offering up free C. Johnson AND Ocho Cinco #85 jerseys with any purchase of $50 or more.
In the article, PFT acknowledges that this probably doesn't mean that Chad Johnson is out of here in 2009, but still finds the whole thing 'confusing'.
Of course our mantra at WDR is to not purchase ANYTHING from the Bengals until changes in the front office are made...but we just had to point out the potential meaning of this offer. Especially since this kind of offer has never been done before by the Bengals.
If things don't turn around in a hurry next season...the Bengals could be asking the Hamilton County taxpayers for another expensive favor...big black tarps for the upper deck seats.
His popularity took a nose dive last off-season. I wonder if anybody bought a single Chad jersey this entire season? I bet they have a lot of leftovers. I'd be more concerned if they were trying to get rid of TJ jerseys...

I honestly think this is a combination of Johnson's lack of popularity and a huge delta in merchandise revenue between 2005 and now. My family spent upwards of $1000 at the proshop over 2005, 2006. We didn't spend a dime there since late 2007.
Of course, those dumb ass Browns would do something cheap like preface trading Johnson for cash and a 5th round pick by trying to make a buck unloading as many jerseys as possible beforehand.

As money-grubbing as Mike Brown is, I don't know that this is necessarily a sign that Chad is outta here. My guess is that almost no one bought a Chad Johnson jersey last year. Why would you? At best, he'll be Ocho Cinco soon. So, even if he stays with the Bengals, you've got an obsolete jersey. Combine that with the way he thumbed his nose at the fans during the offseason then proceeded to have a horrible year, who would want his jersey?
I'd be a LOT more concerned if they were giving away TJ jerseys. I have two. Like Rich, I bought a lot of Bengals gear up until this year. This year, I didn't spend a dime on Bengals gear. And, I want TJ around. Chad, I think will be here. But, I can't say I really care one way or the other about him.

If I were a Bengals fan, I'd hope they were giving Ocho Cinco himself away for a $50 purchase at the Team Shop.
